Rogerian Argument Outline

Article: 6 (+2) reasons to NOT Send Your Daughter to College

Argument: Women should not go to college for various reasons.

Reasons:

  1. They will attract the wrong types of Men.
  2. Will be in near occasion of sinning (sex).
  3. Will not learn to be a wife and mother.
  4. Degree will be hard to pay for.
  5. You don't have to prove anything to the world.
  6. Causes parents to sin (if using an investment at childs birth)
  7. She will regret it.
  8. Could interfere with religious vocation.
=============================================================
Counterargument: Women should be allowed to go to college.

Counters:

  1. Women need to know there Man long enough to know if they want to stay with him. And sometimes it's a choice who gets to stay home. I do share same concern though.
  2. Your Daughter is not the child she was. She's a grown adult. Let her decide her life and help her if she needs it.
  3. Colleges offer Early Childhood Development Classes and Developmental Psychology classes to understand children. But I share the same concern for a house making class.
  4. People can always apply for a grant or a scholarship. There are other ways to pay for college.
  5. This can be applied to everybody, not just women. And although it's not needed for every job, it helps employers focus on hiring you.
  6. Parents do not always pay for kids tuition. They can help them set up a loan or a grant. Even with child investment, you're taking a huge gamble that the child will want to go to college. He/She may want to join the military.
  7. Dual Career families are not always a choice. If anybody gets a job with their degree, it will not feel regrettable at all.
  8. As bad as it sounds, the debt needs to be payed for first. If the woman wants to be in a vocation that badly, she will have to work to get rid of her debt.

Article: Associations between asthma emergency visits and particulate matter sources, including diesel emissions from stationary generators in Tacoma, Washington.
Source )

Main Idea: Pollution in Tacoma is apparent and is also affecting everyone in Tacoma.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Evidence: "[These] studies have found associations between PM 2.5 [Fine particle matter] and asthma symptoms, medication use, increased hospitalization for patients less than 65 years of age, and increased level of Nitrogen Oxide in exhaled breath in children in a panel study."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Response: Since this article has found associations between health problems and the air pollution in Tacoma, People will need to take notice of the effects and make a difference to have healthier air.

Article: Time-Series Study on Air Pollution and Mortality.
Source )

Main Idea: Effects of living with fine air pollution in Beijing.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Evidence: " [the] concentration of air pollutants was related to the changes on daily number of mortality, especially for mortality on respiratory disease and cardiovascular disease.”
 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Response: Although conducted in Beijing, it still applies to Tacoma. It still measures the effects of the same air pollution in Tacoma.

Article: Tacoma-Pierce County Nonattainment Area.
Source )

Main Idea: Facts about the air pollution in Tacoma, Washington.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Evidence: “Fine particles are easily inhaled deep into our lungs and travel into the lungs and circulatory system… Exposure to fine particle pollution is linked to decreased heart and lung function, respiratory disease, asthma attacks, heart attacks, strokes, and premature death.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reason: This from the Department of Health. They set standards for how much exhaust and particles can be released in the air. And since this is coming from a government website describing Tacomas air pollution, it must be a problem.

An Outline for My Written Researched Proposal (FINAL EDIT)

Intro -

Hook: Clean air is something that is essential to peoples health and life. Air that cities, like Tacoma, do not have.

Motive: 1. It's important because it is affecting everyone who is living in Tacoma.
             2. EPA is fining factories around Tacoma for Clean Air Act Violations.
             3. Get this known to the public.

Thesis: People need to pay attention to Tacoma's air quality because it can affect the people living in Tacoma and even the state of Washington in negative ways.

Map: Begin by discussing about Tacoma. Then talk about the air quality and its effects on peoples health and house values. And finish by talking about the solution to fixing this problem and why it would work.

Problem -

What is it?: Air pollution in Tacoma using information from this and this

Why It's a problem?: Affects economy and health of individuals who have been living in Tacoma within the last decade using information from thisthisthis, and this

Solution -

What is it?: To notify the public about this problem.

Why?: To get people to notice this problem by discussing economic consequences with this

Conclusion

I am not the smartest individual to solve this kind of problem. But if this problem is discussed with other people, it has a greater chance to reach the ears of someone who can help with these problems.

Three Section Notes (Part 1)

Thesis: Air pollution in Tacoma should be noticed in order to find a solution to their pollution.
______________________________________________________________________________
Article: US Oil and Refining Co. in Tacoma, WA settles with federal and local air authorities for Clean Air Act Violations
Source )

Main Idea: Air emissions from factories in Tacoma have been unsafe.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Evidence: "The Tacoma Refinery, which can process over 39,000 barrels [of oil] per day, had a range of Clean Air Act violations between 1993 and 2006".

Craig Kenworthy, an executive director of the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, states in the above article that " large operations like US Oil must comply with the standards that protect the health of the people in the region" (Kenworthy).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Response: The PSCAA set the standard for how much pollutants a factory in the Puget Sound can release into the air and maintain a safety of breathable air. And since the Tacoma Refinery has been going against their standards, it proves that the air pollution in Tacoma caries a health risk.

Now this is just one factory. But if you were to overlook Tacoma on a hill, and Tacoma IS on a hill, you could see smoke stacks and cranes by the harbor. Which means that there are multiple factories. And it's possible that they have contributed to Tacoma's air pollution.

Article: A Meta Analysis of the Effect of Environmental Contamination and Positive Amenities on residential Real Estate Values
Source )

Main Idea: Pollution decreases the value of houses.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Evidence: In the sixth paragraph, about the study conducted by Smith and Huang (1995), they found agencies would be more willing to pay for an estate for each unit reduction in air quality.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Response: People's homes in Tacoma are in a spot of air pollution, thus it is reducing the value of their house or their apartment or their condominium.

Although my first article talks about factories while my last article talks about estates being affected, the point remains that some help is needed for Tacoma's air.

How To Tame A Wild Tongue

How To Tame A Wild Tongue starts out describing how the author, Gloria Anzaldua, grew up having her language oppressed by adults and teachers. The story then talks about the languages the author speaks, who she says each language to, and how some of the languages are distinct and how the languages pronounce certain words. But this story mainly focuses on what makes the author who she is, to which she says is through her soul, not the mind. It also focuses on how people change who someone else is.

"If Black English Isn't a Language, Then Tell Me, What Is?"

In this essay by James Baldwin, Baldwin goes on to explain what the definition of language is and how it grows on cultures and people to make them sound different. And it's in this essay that he tries to prove Black English, such as "Jazz" or "Sock it to me!", is a real language.

Prison Studies

In this essay, by Malcolm X, He explains his time in prison and believes people can make the most out of being in prison because he learned how to read and write in his cell. The essay starts with some logos where Malcolm started with his prison studies in Charleston Prison. But this essay focuses more on ethos and pathos. For his ethos, He says in the beginning how people who have seen or read his speeches must think of him as someone educated over eighth grade, but credits his time in prison for the education. He also tells in the essay how he would read a dictionary and copy the words on a tablet, giving him credit for spending time in jail to study. As for his pathos, he expresses a need for curiosity to read many books wherever he goes and a need for importance to make the best time out of being in prison.

Advertisement Rhetorcal Analysis

This commercial, for ice cream, cannot appeal to many audiences. It may not appeal to anybody. It's logos can be understandable but its ethos and pathos make it unappealing to people. Starting with the ads' logos, it's just a guy eating the ice cream that he's covered with. But at the end, the narrator says, "Ice Cream is a feeling." They narrator (the man covered in ice cream) also says "Little Baby's Ice Cream leaves him happy and young." This would explain why he would be covered in ice cream. But, this also affects the pathos of the ad because when people imagine an advertisement, they imagine something to persuade the viewer to buy the product the ad is selling. Not a silent man staring at you while eating ice cream off of himself. The music in the background also creates a creepy atmosphere in the ad as well. As for its ethos, it's credibility, you only have the narrator (the ice cream man) to trust. As the pathos pointed out, the man is creepy, and people would not trust creepy people.

"They Treat Girls Differently, Don't they"

In this story by Timothy Harper, it focuses on a gender bias within the classroom. The first sentence alone states, "Boys get more attention in the classroom than girls." It goes on to say that classrooms can reflect society at large and that there is a reluctance to put a blame on this gender bias. The report argues that girls receive less attention in classrooms causing girls to grow up with low self-esteem and making them less likely to enroll in classes such as chemistry, calculus, and other sciences. But this report also explains how observers think the gender bias is not from teachers but from whoever raises their hand first to a question. observers also think that boys are getting negative attention from teachers to make sure the boys pay attention. They also say that boys will grow up to be highly successful with jobs or they may drop out of school and/or abuse drugs. The author after explaining both sides of this argument, gives many tips to parents at home, parents at school, and teachers on how to prevent a gender bias in the classrooms and to give equal amounts of attention to every student, both girls and boys.
